Attorney Profile

T. Clifton Harviel

T. Clifton Harviel is a solo practioner with over a third of a century of legal experience and dedicates his career almost exclusively to federal criminal defense cases at the District Court (trial) and Circuit Court (appellate) levels of the Federal System. Respected within the legal community and a mentor to many, he has been described by the Sixth Circuit, on record in United States v. Namer, as being an attorney who "exemplifies what we want attorneys to exemplify." United States v. Namer, 149 Fed. Appx. 385, 394 (6th Cir. 2005). The Federal Bar Association voted Clifton the "Outstanding CJA Panel Attorney" for the Western District of Tennessee in 2006, an award that has been given only four times in the history of the Western District of Tennessee.

A graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law in 1976, Mr. Harviel has continued to stay at the top of his continuing legal education and is abreast of the most current trends and emerging case law in his field. He has studied at the University of Houston Law Center's National College for Criminal Defense, the University of Wyoming College of Law's Western Trial Advocacy Institute, and the International Criminal Court Training Course for Criminal Defense Lawyers at the University of Leiden at The Hague, Netherlands, where he was in the first class of lawyers trained to practice before the new International Criminal Court. Mr. Harviel was part of the First General Assembly of the International Criminal Bar in Berlin, Germany. He was asked to and did join Criminal Law Delegations from the United States to both Cuba and China. In Cuba he studied at the Union of Cuban Jurists and in China he conferred with Chinese defense attorneys across the country, as well as at the Center for Women's Studies and Legal Services at Beijing University.

Mr. Harviel is a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL), and the Memphis/Shelby County Bar Association. He is also a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International. He is a charter member of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has the distinction of being enshrined on the Wall of Honor at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
